Fu Hong
 

Fu Hong was born in China in 1946. He studied at the Beijing Arts and Crafts Academy then worked as an artistic designer with China Theatre Music, particularly the Central Folk and Dance Troupe, The National Central Television Drama Section of China Broadcasting Arts Company, The China National Central Television Weekly, and the China National Artistic Association, Beijing.

He arrived in Australia in 1990. After a period of time in Perth, Fu Hong settled permanently in Melbourne and is represented in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and in Queensland. Paintbox Fine Art represents Fu Hong exclusively in Canberra and the south east region. He has had many important solo exhibitions around the world. His first exhibition was held at the highly acclaimed China National Art Gallery in Beijing, when he was 42 – an honour many artists can wait a lifetime for. He has also had several solo exhibitions in Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and Singapore. He was a finalist in the 1996 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. That same year SBS Television and Radio featured him on their programmes. Fu Hong’s entry was also selected for the 2000 Archibald Salon des Refuses in Sydney.

In 2002 he won the inaugural $10,000 Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award promoted by the Bega Valley Regional Gallery. His work is represented in private collections in China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium, the UK and Australia. Major collections include the Murdoch family, Crown Casino, Ethel Turner’s family and the Safti Military Institute of Singapore and the Prime Minister of Singapore, Goh Chok Tong.

His portrait of Australian athlete Cathy Freeman was selected for the 2007 Salon des Refuses at the SH Ervin Gallery in Sydney. In 2007 his work was shown at Paintbox London. In 2008 Fu Hong's commissioned portrait of Joseph Brown was selected as a finalist in the Archibald Prize. He was again a finalist in the Archibald Prize in 2009 with a portrait of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch.
