Jan Weir gained her Associate Diploma, Painting from the Australian National University in 1983. Since that time, she has held annual exhibitions in galleries in Canberra, NSW South Coast and Southern Highlands and Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.
Although she lives inland, her great love is to paint the sea. She is attracted by the drama and grandeur of waves crashing against sand, the harshness of cliff faces, the purity of deep turquoise water. She feels that ocean beaches represent nature at its most elemental. Her paintings are rich with the colours of sandstone and terracotta rockfaces, green and blue water hues, pure white wave caps. She is particularly moved by the scenery of the Mornington Peninsula, a beloved childhood playground for generations of her family, and these paintings typify the spontaneity of her response to this part of Australia.
Weir has won numerous awards for her work and her glorious joy-filled depictions of coastal scenes have charmed their way into collections the world over.
In 2006 Weir's work was exhibited by Paintbox Fine Art at the Affordable Art Fair London and Art Ireland in Dublin. In 2007 her work was shown at Paintbox London and she had a solo exhibition at Paintbox Canberra. [top]
