Dean Home was born in Busselton, WA in 1961, studied at Curtin University and now lives and works in Melbourne.
His work is featured in the recently released book Unfinished Journeys edited by Professor Jenny Zimmer and arts manager Ken McGregor, published by Macmillan Press. This book of paintings and photographs includes the artists John Olsen, Tim Storrier, Jason Benjamin, Yvette Swan, Tanya Hoddinott, Sharon Green, Emma Langridge, Zhong Chen and Mina Young.
In 2004 he was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery to paint Sir Gustav Nossal AC, distinguished scientist and Australian of the Year 2001.
Home’s work was chosen for the coveted Leeuwin Estate Art Series wine labels. His painting appears on the label for the Cabernet Sauvignon 2001, on current release.
Home’s paintings have been influenced by the great masters of art, drawing inspiration from Caravaggio, Raphael and Velazquez. However, he produces a style completely unique and instantly recognisable as his own. In recent years his investigations into the work of Caravaggio have resulted in large studies of fruit, sometimes drawn literally from famous paintings, but most often from still life installations that he sets up himself. These fruit studies exude the same intensity and drama that he applies to his studies of the human figure. Strong contrasts of light and shade combine with sensual overtones, rich colours, shifting fields of vision, and a certain darkness of the soul.
Home is also becoming well known for his figure studies. He interprets the many facets of the human psyche in dark swathes of paint, complemented with rich colour or gold leaf. Dean often uses the male nude as a classic vehicle to portray human drama and inner turmoil, drawing inspiration from the heroic and classic nudes of the past.
He has held over 30 solo exhibitions since 1984 and participated in many group exhibitions. His work is held in the following collections:
National Portrait Gallery - Sir Gustav Nossall, Canberra; National Australia Bank; Telstra Collection; Artbank; Albany City; Bunbury Regional Gallery; Murdoch University; Leeuwin Estate Art Series Collection; MLC, Hawthorn; New Norcia Collection; Perth City; Albany City; Bayswater Council; Busselton Council; corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas
‘The still life can be the embodiment of values, tastes and time. It has the ability to appeal to the primary instincts of sex and human nature, of food and substance. Home’s beautiful works in this genre are symphonies in composition. They are invitations to meditate on beauty, mortality and truth.’
